Apple iPhone 13

Apple launched the iPhone 13 series last year without a charger in the box. It wasn’t the first iPhone series to come without an adapter as the company had already decided to do so with the iPhone 12 series. It has been more than two years since Apple’s iPhone lineup comes without a charging adapter. The move was made citing environmental factors, which according to critics, was Apple’s way of making more money.

A new report by Daily Mail claims that Apple saved nearly five billion pounds by removing the charging adapter and the earphones from its iPhone’s box. When converted, the number is roughly Rs 4,99,20,57,97,300 in Indian rupees. The company might have removed the charging adapter and the wired earphones from the box to make up for the added 5G modem cost used in the newer iPhone models.

In addition to this, Apple might have also minted money from customers after they purchased the charging adapter or wired earphones separately from the brand’s online store or authorised retail stores. “Since announcing the move, Apple is thought to have sold 190 million iPhones worldwide. Total gains from removing chargers and earphones, plus reduced shipping costs, could be as high as £5 billion, with an additional estimated £225 million from the sale of accessories,” the report added.

Apple Said it Removed Accessories for the Environment

Apple had claimed that removing the charger and earphones from the box will result in the boxes getting smaller. This in turn will allow the company to ship 70 percent more devices, which will help reduce its annual carbon emissions by 2 million metric tons. Apple is aiming to go completely carbon neutral by 2030.

The company also announced that a total of 175 Apple suppliers will transition to using renewable energy, and the company and its suppliers will bring online more than 9 gigawatts of clean power around the world. These actions will avoid over 18 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually — the equivalent of taking over 4 million cars off the road each year.

While the move might help Apple and the environment, it certainly might not be cost effective to those who purchase the charging adapter and earphones separately, which by the way, also come with a bunch of paperwork and documents.
